The Botanical Gardens at Asheville were officially created in 1960 after an extensive campaign that involved the entire community.

Sedum and Cordgrass at the Botanical Gardens at AshevilleOn Sunday, November 13, sixty-one people met in Asheville's Seely Hall at the old Asheville-Biltmore College to begin an arboretum. With a design by local landscape architect Doan Ogden, the future gardens were located on some nine acres of land that the State assigned to the group. With dedication and purpose, they met to begin gardens devoted to the native plant species of Western North Carolina and the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

Now, some forty years later, the Gardens have matured, the spring wildflowers have already begun to bloom, and the winding trails are there for walking away the cares of the day.
